Since 1981, the United Nations has annually recognized September 21 as the International Day of Peace. More specifically, the General Assembly officially focuses on dedicating this day to strengthening the ideals of peace, both globally and among individuals. Now, the day even has its own Twitter account.

The theme of this year’s International Day of Peace is “Partnerships for Peace — Dignity for All.” This theme aims to focus on the importance of different parts of society working together to strive for peace.

The day was officially established by resolution 36/67 in 1981, coinciding with the United Nation General Assembly’s opening session which was held annually on the third Tuesday of September. The first International Peace Day was officially celebrated in September 1982.
